Along with age-related signs of saggy skin, frequently also after strong weight fluctuations, after weight-loss or also after pregnancies, the tummy might not recover fully and leave saggy skin, sometimes even creating a so called saggy „apron“. This cannot only be optically disturbing, but it can rather restrict the mobility or even lead to skin irritations and infections in the skin fold at the lower tummy.
During a tummy tuck surgery, the surplus fatty tissue and the saggy skin is being removed. In many cases, even the entire zone beneath the navel can be removed. Afterwards, the navel is reattached to its old position, back onto the remaining tightened tummy skin. In case the tummy muscles are additionally loosened or yielded apart, this simultaneously will be tightened and stabilized at the centre of the tummy. This way also an improved contour of the waist will be emphasized.
Occasionally it makes sense to combine the tummy tuck with a liposuction treatment in order to remove simultaneously disturbing fat depots in the upper belly and waist area and also to obtain an altogether improved body contour.
Most part of the scars at the navel are hidden inside the navel, the long scar in the area of the lower tummy can usually be concealed by underwear i.e. a bikini.
The tummy tuck is carried out under general anaesthesia in the frame of a short stationary stay of maximally two to three days. After the surgery, a compression bodice must be worn for about six weeks.
